The Gulf “Love Boat”
By CAPT. MEL BERMAN, 970-WFLA  Bookmark and Share

It really wasn't that bad a day. Despite unusually cool air temperatures, this late winter Saturday in 1983 arrived with low humidity and a mere five knot zephyr of a northeast wind. Four good tides and Gulf water temperatures in the upper 60s spelled ideal  grouper fishing conditions.  Five Tarpon Springs based charter vessels, mine among them, were standing by for  some 30 scheduled passengers.  More...

Snook Season Is Now Closed (West Coast) There are two snook harvest seasons closing in December. The first snook closure starts on Dec. 1 in all of Florida’s Gulf of Mexico, Everglades National Park and Monroe County coastal and inland waters. The harvest season for snook will remain closed until March 1 in these areas. The closed harvest seasons protect Florida’s valuable snook populations during the colder months, when snook are most vulnerable Shoreline Exemption May Save Florida Anglers from Federal Regulation
Florida state Legislature passed the saltwater fishing license requirement in 1989. However, shore based anglers – meaning any salt water angler fishing from shore, wading from shore, or casting from a bridge - have been exempt. This exemption has been acclaimed by its defenders as a "God-given right", and a 'gift' for Florida fishermen.

Mullet on a Fly? Right after Thanksgiving every year the waters around the Gulf Coast of Florida are invaded with big Mullet and it’s one of the best times of the year to drag out the 8wt and head for the backwaters and residential cannels. Mullet on a fly is very exciting and they are as fast as Bonefish.

Tarpon Stocks in Worse Shape Than Expected  The widespread belief among South Florida recreational anglers that tarpon stocks are in good shape was challenged at a recent scientific symposium in Dania Beach. Fisheries scientists and manager held discussions at the third international Bonefish and Tarpon Symposium.

Do We Really Need All That Stuff? What is it about rods, reels, lures and other assorted gadgets that has us so mesmerized with the hardware of fishing? The other day visiting with a friend, he showed me the several rod racks he had mounted in his garage.

By Any Name, Sheepshead Have Arrived Many anglers call them “sheep head,” and I haven’t corrected them. But I have felt obligated to call them by their proper name “sheepshead,” or even the nickname “convict fish,” or maybe that “goofy, zebra-striped, sheep-lookin’ fish.”

Some Remarkable World Catches We Floridians all enjoy the opportunity of catching everything from small trout to giant tarpon, sharks, cobia and other sub-tropical species. Those same feelings of elation are also triggered when anglers around the world hook their native species

Recreational Anglers Help Scientists Track Dolphinfish Movements Fisheries scientists from around the world learned how recreational anglers can help them conduct important research during last week's World Recreational Fishing Conference in Dania Beach.

FWC Proposes Changes to Anchoring Mooring Statutes

FWC “Eyes in the Skies” Locate Lawbreakers The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Aviation Section at Lake City last December added a weapon in its arsenal to protect the state’s valuable natural resources. The Bell 206 L4 Long Ranger helicopter will enhance search-and-rescue and other law enforcement operations

Boaters Still Need to Watch Out for Manatees No doubt, many anglers are sick of hearing about manatees. Some slow speed/no wake zones are in places where manatees are never seen, and in fact, would never fit; many anglers haven’t even hit one (that they know of ... was that bottom?);

The New Science of Aging: Live Long, Fish Long I suspect that you, like me, have a passion for your fishing. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be viewing this web site. If I were to tell you that there’s a good chance that you could fish into your 80’s and beyond, feeling as if you were in your fifties, would that increase the passion?

Popping On Top Brings Top-Notch Haul  "I really hate bobber fishing," captain Rick Grassett admits as he picks up a rod with what has to be called, well, a bobber. "But sometimes, that's what it takes to catch bigger fish."

Daily Chuckle

Pix of the week

Fishing by the numbers Up until the late 1970s, grouper digging off Florida's "left coast" was a sheer joy.  In those days we were all "meat fishermen," selling our catches and lavishly supporting our offshore fishing avocation.
Hooked On Lures  One of the bonuses of being “Capt. Mel” is that I get many invites from some of the areas best fishing guides. Because of the inadequacies of their novice clients, most use the tried and true live bait method of fishing.
Kayak Fishing -- "A Mother Ship Trip" We loaded up in Chokoloskee about 8:30 and headed south about 25 miles. We put out twice, once to fish the rising tide and once to fish the falling.
